The 5th Visayas Cluster Science and Technology Fair was conducted as part of the celebration of the 2009 National Science and Technology Week. The fair aimed to showcase the contributions of Science and Technology in improving the productivity of micro, small, and medium enterprises, and the general populace. There are two S & T Fairs in the Visayas this year. The recently concluded event was held at the People's Center and Library, Tacloban City on August 3-5, 2009. The other one is in Bacolod City on August 17-21, 2009.
The Eastern Visayas event opened on August 3, 2009 with a simple opening program attended by key DOST officials including the Regional Directors of the three regions in the Visayas, representatives from the academe, line agencies, students, and the general public. Engr. Edgardo M. Esperancilla, DOST-8 Regional Director, welcomed a crowd of about 300, who joined the opening events.
Dr. Carol M. Yorobe, the DOST Assistant Secretary and Officer-in-charge of the Office of the Undersecretary for Regional Operations graced the opening ceremony and delivered the message of the Honorable DOST Secretary Estrella F. Alabastro who was supposed to be the keynote speaker but was unable to attend due to the US trip with the President Gloria Arroyo.
Ms. Bernardita Valenzuela, Executive Assistant IV, represented the Hon. Mayor Alfred Romualdez of Tacloban City while Atty. Raymond Acol, Provincial Legal Officer of Leyte, represented and delivered the message of Governor Carlos Jericho Petilla.
