HIGHLIGHTS - TECHNICAL SESSIONS
AVR-RLRC, Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU), Tacloban City, Leyte
August 5-7, 2009

Day 1-August 5, 2009. The first day, August 5, 2009, of the Technical Sessions marked the opening of a series of technical presentations of various topics as a major event of the 5th Visayas Cluster S & T Fair.
There were a total of 76 participants who registered composed of students, professors, inventors, researchers, and other government workers representing agencies, schools, and institutions around Region VIII.

Day 1 program started with acknowledgement and opening message of Engr. Edgardo M. Esperancilla, DOST-8 Regional Director.
The first presentation for the morning session was on Renewable Energy including the S & T Roadmap for the Energy Sector- delivered by Engr. Patrick E. Montero Science Research Specialist I from the Philippine Council for Industry & Energy Research & Development (PCIERD). Ms. Mae Anne Reyes, Supervising SRS of DOST-8 also presented the DOST-8 programs and projects specifically SET-UP. After the session an open forum followed and concerns were addressed by the speakers and DOST 8 representatives.

In the afternoon Session Engr. Victor G. Revilleza, Senior Science Research Specialist from Forest Products Research& Development Institute (FPRDI), gave the lecture on FPRDI’s Technologies on GHD and Furniture. Concerns from the participants were also answered in the open forum that followed.

The activity was capped by the distribution of token and certificates of appreciation to the speakers and the participants.

The first day events were moderated by Ms. Lucia Dauz, SRS II and Engr. Ramil Uy, Sr. SRS both from DOST-8.



Day 2 August 6, 2009. For day 2, a total of 91 participants coming from all over the region joined the sessions. The group was again represented by high school and college students, teachers, researchers, government workers, and private individuals. Engr. Edgardo M. Esperancilla DOST-8, Regional Director, delivered another welcome message and acknowledged the participants enthusiasm in joining the lecture.

Engr. Reynaldo L. Esguerra, Program Leader of the Integrated Program for Cleaner-Production Technology (IPCT) of the Industrial Technology Development Institute (ITDI) presented a topic on Solid Waste Management as an opening salvo of Day 2. Highlighted during his presentation was also the programs and technologies developed by DOST through ITDI on waste recycling, waste treatment technology (e.g. bioreactor) and generation of energy from waste (e.g. bio-gas). A lively exchange of question and answers followed after the lecture.

In the afternoon session, Engr Nonilo A. Peña, Supervising Science Research Specialist of Philippine Council for Industry & Energy Research & Development (PCIERD), delivered a talk on Climate Change. The presentation covered the causes, effects, and impact of climate change globally and on the Philippines specifically. Also included are the monitoring and mitigating efforts embarked by the country on the crusade to control further damage to the planet.

The sessions were completed with the distribution of tokens and certificates of appreciation to the speakers and certificate of participation to the attendees.


Ms. Florita M. Santiago, Science Research Specialist II, PSTC-So. Leyte served as Master of ceremony while Mr. Roderick B. Pacañot, Science Research Specialist II, DOST VIII acted as moderator in the open forum.


Day 3 August 7, 2009. Day 3 was the final day of the technical sessions. A total of 79 participants joined the lectures again representing the academe, the researchers and inventors, the micro, small and medium enterprise owners, and other private individuals.

Ms. Mae Anne D. Reyes delivered the welcome message and acknowledged the participants in behalf of Dir. Esperancilla, of DOST-8.

The morning session was covered with the presentation of Niña Liza H. Escorial, Chief Science Research Specialist from the Philippine Council for Industry & Energy Research & Development (PCIERD) on Food Safety and the S & T Roadmap for the Food Sector. The Food Safety Lecture covered some basic information on food safety including common food hazards and their effects to human being. Also covered were processes and interventions necessary to ensure food safety.

In the afternoon session Ms. Erlene C. Manohar, PDO IV, FSB and Project Leader PRCGC Project of the Philippine Coconut Authority (PCA) delivered a presentation on Coconut Sugar Technology. Monahar presented the technology on converting the coconut sap into sugar in granule forms like the common sugar. The report also presented the existing projects and firms producing the product.

The activity was completed again with the distribution of certificates to the speakers and the participants.

Ms. Imelda S. Picorro, Science Research Specialist II, PSTC-Leyte acted as Master of Ceremony for the day while Ms. Marilyn O. Radam, Senior Science Research Specialist, DOST VIII served as moderator in the open forum.
